The short answer is: for most people in Northern Ireland, not currently.
Northern Ireland is beginning to introduce publicly funded access to weight loss medication through a new Regional Obesity Management Service, but the first phase is aimed at people with the highest clinical need.
That means medicines commonly described as weight loss injections are not simply available from your GP on request.
For many people who are interested in prescription weight management treatment, private treatment remains the more accessible route.
Here is what you need to know.
Are Weight Loss Injections Available on the NHS in Northern Ireland?
Access is currently very limited.
Northern Ireland has historically not had the specialist weight management services required to provide medicines such as Wegovy and Mounjaro routinely for weight management.
That is now starting to change.
The Department of Health has announced Northern Ireland's first Regional Obesity Management Service, or ROMS, with £5 million of initial funding. The service is being introduced in phases and will include access to weight loss medication where clinically appropriate.
However, this does not mean everyone who meets the usual criteria for private weight loss treatment can receive injections through the Health Service.
The initial criteria are much more restrictive.
Who Can Access the New NHS Weight Management Service?
Current Northern Ireland guidance states that phase one of the Regional Obesity Management Service is intended for adults aged 18 or over who have:
A BMI above 45
and
At least one specified weight-related health condition.
These conditions include:
Cardiovascular disease
High blood pressure requiring medication
Raised cholesterol or triglycerides
Obstructive sleep apnoea confirmed by a sleep study
Type 2 diabetes
The service is specifically being introduced for people living with more complex obesity and those considered to have the greatest clinical need.
So, if your BMI is below 45, even if you may otherwise be clinically suitable for prescription weight management treatment, you are unlikely to qualify for this first phase of the new service.
Can My GP Prescribe Mounjaro for Weight Loss in Northern Ireland?
For most people, you should not expect to simply make a GP appointment and receive Mounjaro for weight loss.
Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, a prescription medicine authorised for weight management in appropriate adults.
NICE recommends tirzepatide as an option for some adults living with overweight or obesity, but actual NHS access depends on local commissioning arrangements and eligibility criteria.
Northern Ireland is introducing its own pathway through the Regional Obesity Management Service rather than making unrestricted weight management prescribing available through ordinary GP appointments.
Your GP can still be a useful starting point if you are concerned about your weight or have conditions associated with obesity.
Can I Get Wegovy on the NHS in Northern Ireland?
Again, access for weight management remains restricted.
Wegovy contains semaglutide and is a prescription-only treatment licensed for weight management in appropriate patients.
The NHS confirms that semaglutide can be prescribed for weight management when the relevant eligibility requirements are met, although access depends on the appropriate weight management pathway.
Northern Ireland's historically limited specialist weight management provision has meant that access has been much more restricted than many people expect after reading about NHS weight loss injections elsewhere in the UK.
The new Regional Obesity Management Service is intended to start addressing that gap.
Why Is NHS Access So Restricted?
There are potentially a very large number of people who could meet the broader clinical criteria for prescription weight management treatment.
Providing treatment safely involves considerably more than issuing a prescription.
Patients may require:
An appropriate clinical assessment
Review of their medical history
Consideration of existing medicines
Weight and BMI assessment
Lifestyle and nutritional support
Monitoring during treatment
Ongoing clinical review
Northern Ireland is therefore introducing its new service gradually, beginning with patients who have the highest level of clinical need.
What If My BMI Is Below 45?
Not qualifying for the first phase of ROMS does not necessarily mean there is no publicly funded support available.
Northern Ireland has also introduced the Obesity Pathway Innovation Programme, or OPIP.
Current guidance says adults with a BMI between 30 and 44.9 may be eligible for support through this programme.
OPIP includes services such as digital support, multidisciplinary healthcare teams, community pharmacy involvement and locally delivered weight management programmes.
Some elements allow self-referral, although availability of individual services can depend on where you live.
This is different from automatically being offered a weight loss injection.
Can I Get Weight Loss Injections Privately in Northern Ireland?
Yes.
Private treatment operates separately from the NHS and Health and Social Care pathway.
Prescription weight management medicines can be considered privately following an appropriate consultation and clinical assessment.
The MHRA makes clear that GLP-1 medicines are prescription-only medicines. If you obtain treatment privately, a healthcare professional must assess you before a prescription is issued.
A clinician may consider factors such as:
Your BMI
Your current weight
Existing medical conditions
Medicines you already take
Previous weight management treatment
Previous side effects or reactions
Your overall medical history
Whether a particular treatment is clinically appropriate
Completing an assessment does not guarantee that a particular medicine will be prescribed.
The prescribing decision should always be made by an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
Do I Need a GP Referral for Private Weight Loss Treatment?
Not necessarily.
With a private online weight management service such as Keltoi Wellness, you can begin with an online eligibility assessment without obtaining a GP referral first.
Keltoi provides a remote weight management service for adults throughout Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK.
Your health information is reviewed by an appropriate UK clinician and prescription treatment is only provided where the prescribing clinician considers it suitable.
There is no obligation to proceed after checking your eligibility.
NHS or Private Weight Loss Treatment: What Is the Difference?
The main difference at present is access.
NHS/HSC treatment
Publicly funded treatment does not involve paying privately for your medication, but access in Northern Ireland remains tightly restricted.
The first phase of the new Regional Obesity Management Service is prioritising adults with a BMI above 45 who also have at least one specified health condition.
Private treatment
Private services have separate clinical eligibility criteria and do not require you to qualify for Northern Ireland's Regional Obesity Management Service.
You still need to complete a clinical assessment and treatment is never guaranteed simply because you are willing to pay for it.
Be Careful Where You Buy Weight Loss Injections
The increase in demand for weight loss medicines has also resulted in counterfeit and illegally supplied products appearing online.
The Northern Ireland Department of Health has specifically warned people against buying weight loss medicines from unregulated websites, social media sellers and other unauthorised sources.
The MHRA also advises that prescription weight loss medicines should only be obtained following a legitimate consultation with a healthcare professional.
Avoid anyone offering prescription injections:
Without a medical assessment
Through social media messages
From beauty salons or non-medical sellers
Without a legitimate prescription
In unapproved forms such as powders that need to be mixed before injection
So, Can I Get Weight Loss Injections on the NHS?
If you live in Northern Ireland, the realistic answer for most people is currently no.
Publicly funded access is beginning to develop, but the first phase of Northern Ireland's new Regional Obesity Management Service is focused on adults with a BMI above 45 plus at least one specified weight-related health condition.
If you do not meet those criteria, other publicly funded weight management support may still be available.
Private weight management treatment is another option for adults who would like to find out whether prescription treatment may be clinically suitable.
