Duckweed and GLP 1s: Can Duckweed Naturally Increase GLP 1?
Duckweed might sound like an unlikely candidate for the latest nutrition trend. Yet a particular edible variety known as Wolffia globosa, including a cultivated strain called Mankai, has attracted research interest for its protein, polyphenols and possible effects on blood glucose and metabolic health.
It has also started appearing in discussions about foods that may influence GLP 1, the same hormone pathway targeted by several modern medicines used for diabetes and weight management.
But does eating duckweed actually increase GLP 1? And could it have anything approaching the effects of GLP 1 medication?
Quick Answer
There is currently not enough human clinical evidence to say that eating duckweed meaningfully increases GLP 1 or produces effects comparable with GLP 1 medicines.
Research involving the edible duckweed Wolffia globosa, particularly the cultivated Mankai strain, is interesting. Small human studies have found potential effects on post meal blood glucose, satiety and metabolic health, while larger dietary trials have included Mankai as part of a green Mediterranean diet.
However, these studies do not establish duckweed as a natural GLP 1 treatment.
Eating a food that potentially influences metabolic or gut hormone pathways is fundamentally different from taking a medicine specifically developed to act on GLP 1 receptors.
What Exactly Is Duckweed?
Duckweed is the general name for a group of extremely small aquatic plants that float on or just below the surface of water.
The variety attracting attention in nutrition research is Wolffia globosa.
Wolffia is among the world's smallest flowering plants and has traditionally been eaten in parts of Southeast Asia.
A cultivated strain called Mankai has been used in several human nutrition studies.
It contains:
- plant protein
- fibre
- polyphenols
- iron
- folate
- several other micronutrients
Research has also identified biologically active forms of vitamin B12 in cultivated Mankai.
That nutritional profile is one reason researchers are interested in it.
It does not, however, automatically make duckweed a weight loss treatment.
Why Is Duckweed Being Linked With GLP 1?
First, What Is GLP 1?
GLP 1 stands for glucagon like peptide 1.
It is a hormone naturally produced by the body, particularly in response to eating.
GLP 1 plays several roles in metabolism. Among other effects, it contributes to:
- feelings of fullness after eating
- appetite regulation
- insulin secretion in response to food
- blood glucose regulation
- the rate at which food leaves the stomach
This is why GLP 1 has become so important in diabetes and obesity research.
Prescription GLP 1 receptor agonists work by acting on this hormonal system for much longer than naturally produced GLP 1 normally remains active.
Where Does Duckweed Come Into It?
Researchers are increasingly interested in whether particular foods and nutrients can influence the body's natural appetite and gut hormone systems.
Laboratory research is exploring Wolffia globosa and its extracts in relation to GLP 1 secretion and other metabolic mechanisms. However, this is not the same as having strong clinical evidence that eating duckweed meaningfully raises GLP 1 in humans or produces significant weight loss through that mechanism.
That distinction matters.
Is Duckweed a "Natural GLP 1"?
No. That Description Goes Beyond the Evidence.
The phrase "natural GLP 1" is increasingly used online for foods, supplements and dietary ingredients.
It is catchy.
Scientifically, it can also be misleading.
Your body already produces GLP 1 naturally.
Different nutrients entering the digestive system can influence the release of hormones involved in appetite and digestion.
That does not make those foods equivalent to a GLP 1 medicine.
Duckweed should therefore not be described as a natural version of semaglutide or other prescription GLP 1 treatments.
There is currently no evidence that eating Mankai recreates the magnitude or duration of the pharmacological effects produced by these medicines.
What Does the Research on Duckweed Actually Show?
This is where the story becomes more interesting.
Although the evidence does not establish duckweed as a GLP 1 alternative, several human studies have investigated Wolffia globosa.
Duckweed and Blood Sugar After Eating
A small randomised crossover trial published in Diabetes Care studied 20 people with abdominal obesity.
Participants consumed either a shake containing Wolffia globosa Mankai or a yoghurt shake with comparable carbohydrate, protein and calorie content.
The Mankai drink produced a lower and later peak in blood glucose after eating, with glucose returning to baseline more quickly. Participants also reported slightly greater satiety after the Mankai drink.
That is interesting.
But it was a study involving only 20 participants and was primarily investigating blood glucose responses, not whether duckweed acts like a GLP 1 medicine.
What About People With Type 2 Diabetes?
More recent research has also looked specifically at people living with type 2 diabetes.
A 2024 randomised crossover study enrolled 45 adults with type 2 diabetes. Participants consumed Mankai or water following their evening meal during different periods of the trial.
Forty participants completed the study.
Researchers found that Mankai consumption was associated with a lower post meal glucose peak and a lower overall glucose response compared with water.
However, there was an interesting detail.
Only around two thirds of participants appeared to respond beneficially to Mankai.
This is another reminder that nutrition rarely produces identical responses in everyone.
The researchers concluded that Mankai may help reduce post meal glucose responses in people with type 2 diabetes.
They did not conclude that it was a substitute for diabetes medication or a GLP 1 treatment.
Can Duckweed Help With Weight Loss?
There is some intriguing evidence, but we need to be careful about attributing the results specifically to duckweed.
One of the most important pieces of research is the DIRECT PLUS trial, involving 294 participants with abdominal obesity or abnormal blood lipid levels.
Participants followed one of three approaches:
- healthy dietary guidelines
- a Mediterranean diet
- a green Mediterranean diet
The green Mediterranean group also consumed walnuts, three to four cups of green tea per day and 100 g of frozen Mankai duckweed in a green shake, while eating less red and processed meat.
After six months, average weight loss was:
Green Mediterranean diet: 6.2 kg
Mediterranean diet: 5.4 kg
Healthy dietary guidelines: 1.5 kg
The green Mediterranean group also experienced a greater reduction in waist circumference than the other groups.
But There Is an Important Limitation
You cannot look at those results and conclude:
Duckweed caused 6.2 kg of weight loss.
It didn't test duckweed in isolation.
The participants were following an entire dietary intervention that included calorie restriction, physical activity, walnuts, green tea, reduced meat consumption and Mankai.
The study therefore supports the potential benefits of the overall dietary pattern, rather than proving that duckweed itself produces substantial weight loss.
What About Visceral Fat?
Another analysis from the DIRECT PLUS trial produced particularly interesting results.
Visceral fat is the fat stored around organs within the abdomen. Higher levels are associated with increased metabolic and cardiovascular risk.
After 18 months, researchers reported that the green Mediterranean group had a greater reduction in visceral fat than either the traditional Mediterranean or healthy dietary guidance groups.
Higher consumption of green tea, walnuts and Wolffia globosa, together with lower red meat consumption and higher levels of certain polyphenols, was associated with greater visceral fat reduction.
Again, however, this was a complete dietary pattern.
It does not prove that adding duckweed to an otherwise unchanged diet will produce the same effect.
Does Duckweed Reduce Appetite?
There is not enough evidence to describe duckweed as an appetite suppressant.
The small 2019 crossover trial did report slightly greater satiety after the Mankai shake compared with the yoghurt shake.
That is worth investigating further.
But feeling slightly fuller after a particular high protein plant based drink is very different from demonstrating a clinically significant appetite suppressing effect.
Protein, fibre, food volume and other components of a meal can all influence fullness.
We should not assume that any difference in appetite was caused by GLP 1.
Is Duckweed Comparable With GLP 1 Medication?
No.
This is perhaps the most important takeaway from the entire subject.
GLP 1 medicines have been specifically developed and clinically tested to produce pharmacological effects on GLP 1 receptors.
Duckweed is a food.
There may eventually be good evidence that particular compounds in Wolffia globosa influence gut hormones, glucose metabolism or appetite.
That would be scientifically interesting.
But even if a food increases the body's natural GLP 1 response after eating, that does not mean it will reproduce the sustained pharmacological effect of a GLP 1 receptor agonist.
The two should not be presented as equivalent.
Can You Eat Duckweed While Taking a GLP 1?
There is currently very limited research specifically examining duckweed consumption alongside prescription GLP 1 treatment.
That means we cannot confidently claim that combining the two produces additional weight loss or enhances the medicine's effects.
It also means there is no evidence based reason for someone to start eating duckweed simply because they have been prescribed a GLP 1 medicine.
Anyone taking prescription medicines should discuss significant dietary supplements or concentrated plant extracts with their doctor or pharmacist, particularly if they also have diabetes or take medicines that affect blood glucose.
Could Duckweed Make GLP 1 Medication Work Better?
There is currently no good evidence that it does.
This is an important distinction because nutritional research can easily become exaggerated online.
Research showing that Mankai may influence:
- blood glucose
- insulin sensitivity
- satiety
- gut bacteria
- body composition
does not demonstrate that it enhances GLP 1 medication.
There would need to be properly designed clinical trials specifically testing that combination before we could make such a claim.
At present, those data are lacking.
Should You Buy Duckweed Supplements for Weight Loss?
There is not enough evidence to recommend duckweed supplements specifically for weight loss.
There is also an important difference between cultivated food grade Mankai used in clinical studies and simply collecting duckweed from a pond.
Duckweed grows directly on water and can potentially be exposed to environmental contaminants.
Do not assume wild duckweed is suitable for human consumption.
Products used as food should come from appropriate controlled cultivation and food production systems.
Supplements also deserve separate consideration because concentrated extracts may not have the same composition or dose as the whole food used in research.
What Does Duckweed Tell Us About Nutrition and GLP 1?
Perhaps the most interesting part of this research is not whether duckweed becomes the next fashionable superfood.
It is what it tells us about the relationship between food, the gut and appetite hormones.
The digestive system is not simply a tube that absorbs calories.
It communicates constantly with the brain, pancreas and other organs using hormones and nerve signals.
Different combinations of:
- protein
- carbohydrate
- fat
- fibre
- plant compounds
- food structure
can affect how we respond to meals.
Research into foods such as Wolffia globosa may eventually help scientists understand these systems more clearly.
That is very different from claiming we have discovered a food based replacement for prescription medication.
Do You Need "GLP 1 Boosting Foods" to Lose Weight?
No.
There is no requirement to seek out unusual foods or supplements to manipulate GLP 1.
Body weight is influenced by many interacting factors, including:
- appetite
- genetics
- hormones
- sleep
- diet
- physical activity
- medical conditions
- medication
- stress
- eating patterns
- environment
- previous dieting
For some people, changing food and activity habits may be enough.
Others may benefit from structured weight management support.
For some patients, prescription treatment may be considered following an appropriate clinical assessment.
None of these approaches requires eating duckweed.
What Is the Bottom Line on Duckweed and GLP 1?
The research is interesting. The headlines are ahead of the evidence.
Mankai Wolffia globosa is an unusual but nutritionally interesting edible aquatic plant.
Human studies suggest potential benefits involving post meal blood glucose, metabolic health and satiety, and Mankai has formed part of a green Mediterranean dietary pattern associated with improvements in weight and visceral fat.
But we currently do not have convincing human evidence that eating duckweed substantially boosts GLP 1, acts like a GLP 1 medicine or enhances the effects of prescription GLP 1 treatment.
So if you encounter claims that duckweed is a "natural Ozempic", considerable scepticism is warranted.
