Foundayo vs Wegovy Tablets: What’s the Difference?

Foundayo vs Wegovy Tablets: What’s the Difference?
Foundayo and Wegovy tablets are two prescription weight management treatments available in the UK.
Both are once daily GLP-1 tablets, both can be prescribed for weight management in eligible adults, and both work partly by helping regulate appetite.
However, they are not the same medicine.
Foundayo contains orforglipron, while Wegovy tablets contain semaglutide. They also have different dosing schedules, different instructions for how the tablets should be taken and different clinical trial data.
So what is the difference between Foundayo and Wegovy tablets, and how might a clinician decide which one is more appropriate?

Both medicines are authorised for weight management in adults with obesity, or adults who are overweight and have at least one weight related health condition.
What is Foundayo?
Foundayo is the brand name for orforglipron.
It was authorised in the UK in August 2026 for weight management and type 2 diabetes.
Orforglipron is a GLP-1 receptor agonist taken as a tablet once a day.
For weight management, Foundayo is authorised for adults with:
- A BMI of 30 or above
- Or a BMI of 27 to 29.9 with at least one weight related health condition
Treatment is used alongside a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity.
What are Wegovy tablets?
Wegovy tablets contain semaglutide.
Semaglutide is already widely known as the active ingredient in the weekly Wegovy injection. The tablet version was authorised in the UK in 2026 for weight loss and weight management.
Like Foundayo, Wegovy tablets are taken once a day.
The eligibility criteria are also broadly the same:
- BMI of 30 or above
- Or BMI of 27 to 29.9 with at least one weight related health condition
Examples can include high blood pressure, abnormal blood fat levels, obstructive sleep apnoea and cardiovascular disease.
Do Foundayo and Wegovy tablets work in the same way?
They belong to the same broad group of medicines.
Both act on the GLP-1 receptor, which is involved in appetite, food intake and blood sugar regulation.
This can help people feel fuller, reduce appetite and eat less.
However, the medicines themselves are different.
Wegovy contains semaglutide, while Foundayo contains orforglipron.
This difference in their formulation is also one reason the medicines have different instructions for how they are taken.
How do you take Foundayo?
Foundayo is taken once daily.
Treatment begins at 0.8 mg daily.
The dose can then be increased gradually through:
- 0.8 mg
- 2.5 mg
- 5.5 mg
- 9 mg
- 14.5 mg
- 17.2 mg
Dose increases are normally separated by at least 30 days and depend on response and tolerability.
One of Foundayo's practical advantages is that it can be taken with or without food.
This can make it easier to fit into an ordinary daily routine.
How do you take Wegovy tablets?
Wegovy tablets are also taken once daily.
The dosing schedule begins at:
- 1.5 mg
- 4 mg
- 9 mg
- 25 mg
Each stage normally lasts for at least one month before the dose is increased.
The 25 mg tablet is the usual maintenance dose.
Unlike Foundayo, Wegovy tablets have more specific instructions around food and drink.
They should be taken:
- After fasting for at least 8 hours
- On an empty stomach
- With no more than around 120 mL of water
- At least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other oral medicines
Following these instructions matters because food, larger amounts of water and other tablets can reduce how much semaglutide is absorbed.
Which is easier to take?
For some people, this may be one of the biggest practical differences between the two medicines.
Foundayo has fewer restrictions around when it can be taken.
You can take it with or without food, which may make it easier to incorporate into your normal routine.
Wegovy tablets require a more structured routine because of the fasting and waiting requirements.
That does not mean Wegovy tablets are difficult to use, but you do need to remember the instructions each day.
For someone who already takes several oral medicines first thing in the morning, this may be an important consideration for the prescribing clinician.
Which causes more weight loss?
Both medicines have produced significant weight loss in clinical trials, but the results should be interpreted carefully.
They were studied in different clinical trials involving different groups of patients, so comparing headline percentages does not prove that one medicine is better than the other.
In the ATTAIN-1 study, participants taking the highest studied dose of orforglipron achieved an average body weight reduction of approximately 12.4% after 72 weeks.
In the OASIS 4 study of Wegovy tablets, participants receiving semaglutide 25 mg achieved an average body weight reduction of approximately 13.6% after 64 weeks.
Those figures should not be treated as a direct comparison.
Individual results can vary considerably and the treatment that is most appropriate will depend on much more than the average weight loss reported in a clinical trial.
What are the side effects?
Because Foundayo and Wegovy tablets both act on the GLP-1 receptor, some of their common side effects are similar.
These can include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Constipation
- Indigestion
- Abdominal discomfort
These effects can be more noticeable when treatment begins or when the dose is increased.
Both medicines can also have less common but potentially serious side effects, which is why treatment should only be started following a proper clinical assessment.
Patients should always read the Patient Information Leaflet supplied with their medicine.
Is there a difference for contraception?
There can be.
Foundayo may reduce the effectiveness of oral hormonal contraceptives when treatment is started and following dose increases.
The prescribing information recommends using a non-oral contraceptive method or adding a barrier method for 30 days after starting Foundayo and for 30 days following each dose increase.
Anyone using hormonal contraception should make sure this is discussed during their assessment.
Can you use Foundayo or Wegovy tablets during pregnancy?
Neither medicine should be used during pregnancy.
Foundayo should be stopped before a planned pregnancy in line with the prescribing information.
Semaglutide should also be stopped in advance of a planned pregnancy because it remains in the body for longer.
Neither treatment should be used while breastfeeding.
Can I switch from Wegovy injections to Wegovy tablets?
Potentially, yes, but this should be managed by the prescribing clinician.
You should not attempt to switch between injectable and tablet treatments yourself.
The appropriate starting point depends on the treatment and dose you are currently using.
Is Foundayo better than Wegovy tablets?
There is no simple answer.
Foundayo may appeal particularly to someone who:
- Wants a daily GLP-1 tablet
- Would prefer fewer restrictions around meals
- Finds fasting medication routines difficult
- Wants an alternative to semaglutide
Wegovy tablets may appeal to someone who:
- Has previously responded well to semaglutide
- Would prefer tablets rather than weekly Wegovy injections
- Can comfortably follow the fasting instructions
- Has been advised by their clinician that semaglutide is appropriate
The most suitable medicine depends on your health, other medication, previous treatment, preferences and the clinician's assessment.
Foundayo vs Wegovy tablets: which should I choose?
You do not necessarily need to decide before completing a weight management assessment.
A clinician can review factors including:
- Your BMI
- Medical history
- Current medication
- Previous weight loss treatments
- Side effects you may have experienced previously
- Other health conditions
- Your preferred treatment format
- How easily the dosing instructions fit your routine
From there, they can decide whether Foundayo, Wegovy tablets or another weight management treatment is appropriate.
The bottom line
Foundayo and Wegovy tablets are both once daily GLP-1 treatments for weight management, but they contain different active ingredients.
Foundayo contains orforglipron and can be taken with or without food.
Wegovy tablets contain semaglutide and need to be taken on an empty stomach, with specific fasting instructions.
Both require a prescription and clinical assessment.
If you are unsure which treatment may suit you, the best place to start is with an eligibility and medical assessment rather than choosing solely on the basis of brand name or advertised weight loss.
At Keltoi, our UK prescriber reviews your assessment and can determine which available weight management treatment is appropriate for your individual circumstances.
Treatment is subject to clinical assessment. Prescription weight management medicines are not suitable for everyone.
