How to Make Healthier Choices When You’re Short on Time

How to Make Healthier Choices When You’re Short on Time
Most people know what they are meant to do.
Eat a bit better. Move a bit more.
Get enough sleep. Cook more.
Order fewer takeaways.
Easy enough when you have time.
The problem is when you do not.
You finish work late.
You are starving.
There is nothing obvious in the fridge.
Someone needs picked up.
Someone else wants something.
You cannot be bothered cooking.
That is normally when the takeaway app gets opened.
And to be fair, sometimes that is absolutely fine.
The problem is when that becomes the answer every time life gets busy.
Make Things Easier, Not Harder
A lot of healthy eating advice seems to assume you have loads of time.
You do not need to cook everything from scratch.
You do not need to spend Sunday making 12 meals for the week.
You do not need to spend 45 minutes chopping vegetables every night.
Sometimes dinner just needs to be quick and decent.
That is enough.
Eggs on toast.
Chicken and microwave rice.
Soup and a sandwich.
Pasta.
A wrap.
A decent ready meal with something added to it.
Nothing fancy.
Just food that gets the job done.
Convenience Food Is Not Always the Problem
Convenience gets a bad name.
But sometimes it is exactly what helps.
Frozen vegetables.
Microwave rice.
Pre-cooked chicken.
Bagged salad.
Soup.
Tinned beans.
Chopped fruit.
None of that is cheating.
If buying something already prepared means you actually eat it rather than ordering a takeaway, that is probably a win.
Have One Emergency Dinner
This is probably one of the easiest things you can do.
Have one dinner you can always fall back on.
Something quick.
Something you like.
Something you usually have in the house.
For us it might be something like eggs, toast and a bit of salad.
For someone else it might be pasta and tuna.
Or something in the freezer.
It does not matter.
The important bit is having an answer when someone says:
“What are we having for dinner?”
Because that is usually the point where everyone is hungry and nobody can be bothered.
Do Not Let Yourself Get Starving
This catches loads of people out.
You get busy.
Lunch gets pushed back.
Then you forget about it.
Maybe you have a coffee instead.
By 5pm you are absolutely starving.
At that point, you are not standing in the supermarket carefully comparing healthy options.
You want food now.
Sometimes making better choices at night starts with simply eating lunch.
It does not have to be amazing.
Sandwich.
Soup.
Leftovers.
Yoghurt and fruit.
Something.
Anything is better than accidentally eating nothing all day and then wondering why you want half the kitchen at night.
Keep Something at Work
If work is where it normally goes wrong, keep something there.
Nothing dramatic.
A few bits that will get you through a busy day.
Fruit.
Porridge.
Nuts.
Soup.
Crackers.
Protein yoghurt in the fridge.
Whatever works for you.
It is much easier than relying on the vending machine or whatever someone has brought into the office.
Use the Freezer Properly
You do not need to become a meal prep person.
Just make a bit extra sometimes.
If you are making chilli, make more.
Same with curry.
Bolognese.
Soup.
Stick a couple of portions in the freezer.
Then on the night when everything goes wrong, you have dinner sitting there.
That is much more realistic than pretending you are going to spend every Sunday cooking for the full week.
Lunch Does Not Need to Be Exciting
This is another thing people overcomplicate.
Lunch can be boring.
It is fine.
If there are two or three lunches you like and they work for you, have them regularly.
You do not need a new recipe every day.
Sometimes removing the decision makes everything easier.
You have enough stuff to think about already.
Sometimes the Shop Is Quicker Than the Takeaway
If there is nothing in the house, stop at the shop.
You do not need to do a full food shop.
Just get dinner.
Something quick.
Something decent.
Something you will actually eat.
Sometimes ten minutes in Tesco is quicker than ordering food and then waiting 45 minutes for it anyway.
Stop Looking for the Perfect Choice
This is probably where a lot of people trip themselves up.
You think:
“Well, I cannot have the perfect healthy meal tonight, so what is the point?”
But it does not need to be perfect.
Maybe tonight the choice is between a huge takeaway and a ready meal.
The ready meal might not be the healthiest thing you have ever eaten.
Who cares?
It might still be the better choice for that night.
That is enough.
Do Not Write the Whole Day Off
You had a rubbish breakfast.
Lunch was not great.
Then someone brought cake into work.
That does not mean dinner has to be a write-off too.
You can just have a normal dinner.
You do not need to turn one bad meal into a bad day.
And you definitely do not need to turn one bad day into a bad week.
Look at Why You Keep Ordering Takeaways
There is nothing wrong with having a takeaway.
But if it keeps happening because you are too tired to cook, there is probably something you can change.
Maybe the meals you are planning are too complicated.
Maybe you are getting home too hungry.
Maybe there is never anything quick in the house.
Maybe you just hate cooking.
Fair enough.
But knowing the reason helps.
Saying “I need to stop ordering takeaway” does not really solve much.
Making dinner easier does.
Make Breakfast Simple
Morning is not the time for complicated plans either.
If you are always rushing, have a few breakfasts you know work.
Toast.
Eggs.
Porridge.
Yoghurt.
Fruit.
Whatever.
Keep it simple.
You do not need to reinvent breakfast every morning.
You Probably Have More Than Zero Minutes to Move
“I do not have time to exercise” can genuinely be true if you mean an hour in the gym.
But you might have ten minutes.
Or 15.
Go for a quick walk.
Walk while you are on the phone.
Park a bit further away.
Get outside at lunch.
It all counts.
You do not need to put gym gear on and turn it into a full event every time.
Sometimes Going to Bed Is the Healthier Choice
This gets overlooked.
You are busy all day.
Then at night, you finally get a bit of peace.
So you stay up.
Scroll.
Watch another episode.
Then another.
And suddenly it is midnight.
Sometimes the best thing you can do is just go to bed.
Especially if you are already wrecked.
Everything is harder when you are tired.
Make the Easy Choice Easy to See
Keep fruit somewhere obvious.
Keep water beside you.
Have something quick in the fridge.
Keep something useful in the freezer.
Leave your walking shoes somewhere you will actually see them.
Nothing clever.
It just saves you having to think about it when you are tired.
Plan for a Bad Day
Anybody can make good choices when they have loads of time and energy.
The real question is what happens on the horrible Wednesday.
You are late.
You are hungry.
You are fed up.
You cannot be bothered.
What would make that night easier?
Something in the freezer?
A quick dinner?
Lunch already sorted?
Not having to go to the shop?
That is the sort of planning that actually helps.
Healthy Does Not Have to Look Impressive
A lot of healthy choices are really boring.
Making a sandwich instead of skipping lunch.
Going for a ten-minute walk.
Having water beside you.
Going to bed earlier.
Making enough dinner to have lunch tomorrow.
None of it looks exciting.
But it works.
What About Weight-Management Support?
Sometimes people are doing plenty of sensible things and still find weight management difficult.
Depending on things like BMI, medical history, current medication and individual circumstances, prescription weight-management treatment may sometimes be an option.
It is not suitable for everyone and it should only be supplied after a proper clinical assessment.
At Keltoi, adults can complete an online weight-management assessment reviewed by a UK prescriber.
If treatment is suitable, the available options can then be discussed.
The Bottom Line
If you are short on time, stop trying to make healthy choices complicated.
Keep a few easy meals in the house.
Eat before you get absolutely starving.
Use convenience food when it helps.
Have something in the freezer.
Go for ten minutes instead of doing nothing because you cannot manage an hour.
And if the healthiest possible choice is not realistic, make a slightly better one.
That is usually enough.
Most people do not need a perfect routine.
They just need one that still works when the day goes wrong.
