Mounjaro Northern Ireland: Eligibility, Prices and How Treatment Works

If you are looking for Mounjaro in Northern Ireland, there is a good chance you have already seen wildly different information online.

One website says you need a BMI of 30. Somewhere else says 35. You may have heard that Mounjaro is now available through the Health Service, while somebody you know has simply gone private and had treatment delivered to their home.

The reason it gets confusing is that the rules for private treatment and the rules for HSC-funded treatment are not the same thing.

So here is the straightforward version.

What Is Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide. It is a prescription medicine that is licensed in the UK for weight management in certain adults, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

It is given as an injection once a week.

You will often hear Mounjaro grouped together with GLP-1 weight-loss medicines. Tirzepatide actually works on two hormone pathways, GIP and GLP-1, which are involved in things such as appetite, feelings of fullness and blood sugar regulation.

It is not something you should simply be able to add to a basket and buy without speaking to a healthcare professional. Mounjaro is prescription-only, which means a clinician needs to assess whether it is appropriate for you first.

Who Can Qualify for Mounjaro Privately in Northern Ireland?

For weight management, the UK licence allows Mounjaro to be considered for adults with an initial BMI of:

  • 30 or above, or
  • 27 to 29.9 if they also have at least one weight-related health condition.

Those conditions can include things such as high blood pressure, raised cholesterol or triglycerides, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.

That is the basic eligibility position.

It does not mean that everybody with a BMI over 30 is automatically suitable for Mounjaro.

The prescriber still needs to look at your medical history, the medication you already take, any previous weight-loss treatment and anything else that could make Mounjaro unsuitable or mean another approach would be better.

That is why two people with exactly the same BMI can end up with different clinical decisions.

Do You Need a GP Referral?

Not normally if you are considering private treatment.

With an online private weight-management service, you can usually start by completing the clinic's own assessment.

If the prescriber needs more information, they may ask you further questions and there will occasionally be situations where they want you to speak to your GP before anything goes further.

But you do not usually need to wait for a GP referral simply to find out whether private treatment may be suitable.

At Keltoi, the process starts with a free eligibility check, followed by the clinical information needed for the prescriber to make a proper decision.

How Much Does Mounjaro Cost in Northern Ireland?

This is where it is worth checking exactly what a clinic's advertised price includes.

Private Mounjaro prices vary between providers and can also vary depending on the dose. Some clinics advertise the medication price separately from consultations or delivery, while others bundle everything together.

At the time of writing, Keltoi advertises Mounjaro from £99 for one month's supply, subject to clinical assessment. The live price is shown before you proceed with payment, and treatment pricing can vary by dose or current offer.

With Keltoi, the treatment price includes the assessment, doctor review, medication and delivery where treatment is prescribed. There is no payment required simply to complete the initial eligibility check.

That is worth looking at when comparing clinics because a cheaper-looking headline price is not necessarily cheaper once consultation or delivery charges are added.

Why Does the Price Change With the Dose?

Mounjaro comes in a number of strengths.

The UK product information lists:

  • 2.5 mg
  • 5 mg
  • 7.5 mg
  • 10 mg
  • 12.5 mg
  • 15 mg

Each KwikPen contains four weekly doses.

Private pharmacy costs are not the same for every strength, so the amount a clinic charges can increase as the dose changes.

That is why it is worth looking beyond the first-month offer when comparing providers.

The price you pay in month one is not necessarily what you will pay throughout treatment.

What Dose Do You Start On?

For adults starting tirzepatide, the licensed starting dose is 2.5 mg once a week.

After four weeks, the dose is normally increased to 5 mg once weekly. If further increases are clinically appropriate, they can be made in 2.5 mg steps after at least four weeks on the current dose.

The recommended maintenance doses are 5 mg, 10 mg and 15 mg, with 15 mg being the maximum weekly dose for adults.

This does not mean everybody is supposed to get to 15 mg.

The right dose depends on the individual, how treatment is going and the clinical decision made by the prescriber.

Do not increase the dose yourself because you think a higher dose must mean better results.

How Does the Keltoi Process Work?

We have tried to keep it fairly simple.

You start with the online eligibility check. That gives an initial indication of whether weight-management treatment may be worth considering.

If you want to continue, you create your secure patient record and complete the required health information.

You can then see the treatment route and live price before paying.

After the required checks and intake information are completed, everything goes to the doctor for review.

If treatment is clinically appropriate, a prescription can then be issued and sent to a registered pharmacy for dispensing and delivery.

Keltoi itself coordinates the process. The clinical decision is made by the prescribing doctor, and medicines are dispensed by independent registered pharmacy partners.

Can Mounjaro Be Delivered in Northern Ireland?

Yes, private treatment can be considered for eligible adults throughout Northern Ireland.

You do not need to live in Belfast or travel to a physical weight-loss clinic simply because you are considering prescription treatment.

Someone in Bangor, Newry, Derry, Ballymena, Coleraine, Omagh or Enniskillen can complete an online assessment in the same way as somebody in Belfast.

Where treatment is prescribed, it can then be dispensed by the pharmacy and delivered.

That is one of the main reasons online weight-management services are useful in Northern Ireland. Your postcode does not need to determine whether you can even have an assessment.

How Quickly Can Treatment Start?

If everything is straightforward, private treatment can move relatively quickly.

There still has to be a clinical assessment first.

The doctor may need more information, the pharmacy needs the prescription, and dispensing and delivery need to happen afterwards.

So be wary of anyone who effectively promises you Mounjaro instantly without asking proper medical questions.

The MHRA says that anyone obtaining GLP-1 medicines privately should have a consultation with a healthcare professional before a prescription is issued. It also warns against buying these medicines through social media, beauty salons or other unregulated sellers.

Quick is useful.

Skipping the proper checks is not.

Can I Get Mounjaro Through the Health Service in Northern Ireland?

Northern Ireland is in a slightly unusual position because public weight-management services are currently changing.

In June 2026, the Department of Health announced the first phase of Northern Ireland's new Regional Obesity Management Service, or ROMS.

The first phase is aimed at adults aged 18 or over with a BMI above 45 plus at least one specified health condition, including cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure requiring medication, raised cholesterol or triglycerides, confirmed obstructive sleep apnoea or type 2 diabetes.

ROMS can include weight-loss medication where clinically appropriate, but that does not mean everyone who meets the licensed criteria for private Mounjaro can now get it through the HSC.

That is the important bit.

Private eligibility and HSC eligibility are different.

What About People With a BMI Below 45?

Northern Ireland has also introduced the Obesity Pathway Innovation Programme, usually called OPIP.

Current NI Direct information says people with a BMI between 30 and 44.9 may be eligible for support through OPIP. The programme includes digital support, clinical teams, community pharmacies and locally delivered services, with some elements depending on where you live.

Again, OPIP is a weight-management programme.

It should not be read as a guarantee that Mounjaro will be prescribed.

Can I Switch to Keltoi if I Already Use Mounjaro?

Potentially, yes, but do not just order whatever dose you think you need.

If you have been receiving Mounjaro from another provider, tell the clinician what dose you are currently using and when you last took it.

The same applies if you stopped treatment for a while and now want to restart.

The prescriber needs that information to decide what is safe and appropriate.

The MHRA specifically advises people to speak to a healthcare professional before switching between GLP-1 medicines because the drugs and doses are not automatically interchangeable.

Does Mounjaro Mean You Do Not Need to Change Anything Else?

No.

Mounjaro is licensed for weight management alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

That does not mean you need to suddenly live in the gym or eat salad for every meal.

It means the medication is intended to sit alongside longer-term changes rather than replacing them completely.

For most people, the useful changes are fairly ordinary: eating more sensibly, becoming more active where possible, getting enough sleep and building habits you can actually maintain.

Is Mounjaro Safe to Buy Online?

It can be supplied legitimately online, but the provider matters.

The MHRA says genuine GLP-1 medicines should be obtained from a legitimate pharmacy with a prescription issued by a healthcare professional. For pharmacies based in Northern Ireland, registration can be checked with the Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland.

You should be very cautious if somebody is offering Mounjaro through Facebook, WhatsApp, a beauty salon or another route where nobody has properly assessed you.

The fact that something looks like a real pen does not prove that it is genuine.

What Should I Look at When Comparing Prices?

Do not look only at the biggest number in the advert.

Check what happens after the first month.

Ask whether the price includes the clinical assessment.

Check whether delivery is included.

Look at what the higher doses cost.

Find out whether you have access to the clinic if something goes wrong or you have a question.

And make sure there is actually a qualified prescriber making the clinical decision.

Saving £10 on a prescription medicine is not much of a bargain if the service around it is poor.

The Bottom Line

If you are looking for Mounjaro in Northern Ireland, private treatment is available for eligible adults, but it still needs to start with a proper clinical assessment.

The basic licensed BMI criteria for weight management are 30 or above, or 27 to 29.9 with at least one relevant weight-related health condition. Meeting those criteria does not guarantee that Mounjaro will be suitable for you.

At Keltoi, you can start with a free online eligibility check. If you continue, your information is reviewed by a UK prescriber and, where treatment is appropriate, the prescription is dispensed through a registered pharmacy partner and delivered.

Current advertised Mounjaro pricing starts from £99 for one month's supply, with the live price shown before you proceed.

Northern Ireland's public weight-management services are also beginning to develop, but access through ROMS currently uses much tighter criteria than private treatment.

So if you are unsure which route applies to you, start by checking your eligibility rather than trying to work it all out from what somebody on Facebook is taking.

This article is for general information only and does not replace individual medical advice. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine. Treatment is subject to individual clinical assessment and suitability.
